Budget 2026: Important Tax Change for Secondary Market Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGBs)
The Finance Bill 2026 has introduced an important clarification regarding the taxation of Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGBs) purchased from the secondary market.
What has changed?
✅ Original Subscribers: Investors who subscribed to SGBs at the time of the original issue and hold them until maturity will continue to enjoy tax-free redemption (subject to applicable Government rules).
✅ Secondary Market Buyers: Investors who purchased SGBs through NSE or BSE after the original issue will no longer receive tax-free redemption. Capital gains at maturity will now be taxed as Long-Term Capital Gains (LTCG) at 12.5%, plus applicable surcharge and cess.
What remains unchanged?
- SGBs continue to be Government-backed securities.
- Investors continue to receive 2.5% annual interest, paid semi-annually.
- Interest income remains taxable as per the investor's applicable income tax slab.
